Board of Directors

William P. Moffitt III

Chairman of Microvisk, based in Chicago

Bill has more than 35 years experience in the field of medical diagnostics and devices.  The first half of his career was spent working for American Hospital Supply Corporation and then Baxter Healthcare where he progressed from an entry level sales position at American to a division president role in both organisations.  The last half of Bill’s career has been spent building and leading technology driven start-up businesses through research and development and onto commercialisation and market penetration including i-STAT Corporation and Nanosphere, Inc.  Bill has been an independent director of numerous private companies and is currently chairman of the board of GlySure Ltd and vice chairman of the board of the Illinois Biotechnology Industry Organization. 


Terence Swainbank

Director of Microvisk

Terry is Investment Manager at Synergis Technologies Ltd whose parent Porton Capital Inc. is Microvisk Ltd's largest investor. Terry formerly managed another Microvisk investor - the Rainbow Seed Fund and has significant experience with seed investments especially with PSREs. Previously Terry was Finance Director and Investment Manager of West Midlands Enterprise Ltd. Terry has a degree in minerals engineering from Birmingham and an MBA and has over 20 years experience in the venture capital industry, having started his career in the industry with 3i in Manchester.  Terry was a director of a Birmingham based SME angel investor matching service.


B. Wayne Johnson

Director of Microvisk

Wayne has over 31 years of medical device experience, primarily in the areas of general management, operations, and product development. Prior to OrbusNeich, he was president and CEO of Sutura, Inc., a development stage company based in Fountain Valley, California, focused on commercializing suture-mediated wound closure products. Preceding Sutura, Wayne was president and CEO of Prostec, LLC (a division of Syntheon, LLC), dedicated to devices for prostate brachytherapy. Prior to Prostec, he was employed by Cordis, a Johnson & Johnson company, for 18 years, during which time he held various roles of increasing responsibility including vice president and general manager of Cordis' largest facility. He was also a member of the Cordis operating board as vice president of worldwide operations. Wayne holds a BS in biology and both an MBA and an MS in management from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.


Matthew Frohn

Director of Microvisk

Matthew is a director of Longwall Venture Partners LLP which manages Microvisk investor Oxford Technology Enterprise Capital Fund and the Longwall Ventures Enterprise Fund. Matthew has a D.Phil in Biochemistry from the University of Oxford. He began working in clinical pathology before moving to research roles, working with Zeneca, and Neures, a British Biotech subsidiary. Matthew began venture investing in 1999, and has worked with several investee companies both as an interim manager and at board level. Matthew predominantly focuses on life science and healthcare opportunities.


Jim Thurlow

Chief Operating Officer & Director of Microvisk

Jim joined Microvisk in April 2012 having spent the previous 20 years in the IVD industry in a variety of Technical, Quality, R&D and operational leadership and senior management roles at Siemens Healthcare Diagnostics and previously Diagnostics Products Corporation (DPC). During his early career, Jim was responsible for leading efforts to establish the necessary systems to support the manufacture of DPC’s IMMULITE® reagent manufacture activities in the UK, with specific responsibility for technology transfer of product out of R&D, through scale up and into routine Manufacturing. More recently, Jim played a key role in the transfer of manufacture of 50+ IVD products from US manufacture to the UK, ensuring compliance to the appropriate standards and regulations. Jim lives in North Wales with his wife and two daughters and enjoys the excellent lifestyle that goes with living in this beautifully scenic part of the world.

Emma Keefe

Having graduated from Aston University with a BSc in French & European Studies, Emma started at Morgan Stanley Quilter and worked her way up the Investment Management ladder passing the IMC & Securities Institute examinations along the way. Emma is now Head of Business Support at Microvisk and manages all the financial, company secretarial, legal and human resources areas of the business. Emma lives in North Wales with Patrick and their three children.


Production Manager

Robin Shepherd

Robin joined Microvisk as a Production Manager in June 2012, bringing with him over 21 years’ experience in the manufacture of IVD medical devices. Having held a number of manufacturing leadership roles at Siemens Healthcare Diagnostics and previously Diagnostics Products Corporation (DPC), Robin has significant experience in a wide range of bulk liquid manufacture, automated filling and packaging operations, strategic planning, lean principles and development in the Diagnostics industry. Robin lives at the foot of the Snowdonia Park, North Wales with his wife and young son and is a keen golfer.


Instrumentation Manager

Mike Burgess

Mike joined Microvisk in April 2008. He is responsible for the instrumentation and hardware development of the clinical products. Previously, Mike was Automation Manager on the UK Biobank Project, designing and implementing a high throughput automated laboratory and storage facility for processing biological samples. He has also run a development team for Tepnel Life Sciences, developing instrumentation and chemistry kits with a wide range of biological applications. Mike graduated with an honours degree in Molecular Biology and Biotechnology from the University of Hull in 1996 and attained a Masters in Instrumentation from UMIST in 2003.


Director of Sensor Development

Dr Vladislav Djakov

Vladislav is the co-founder of Microvisk Ltd and the inventor of Microvisk MEMS-based Technology. Born in Belgrade, Serbia, Vladislav came to UK in 1995 to pursue an MSc in Artificial Intelligence followed by a PhD in Micro-Robotics. With over 14 years of extensive ‘hands-on’ expertise on a number of micro-fabrication techniques, as well as microelectronics interfacing and data acquisition, Vladislav was responsible for a portfolio of International and National Projects on Micro and Nanotechnology at the Science and Technology Facilities Council, Rutherford Appleton Laboratory with focus on Micro System Technology in Bio-Medical Field, Medical Diagnostics, Security and Space Science, since October 2000. In November 2007, Vladislav joined Microvisk team as the Sensor Development Director and Technology Consultant. He is also responsible for the company’s IP portfolio and the principal author of its three international patent families.
